Ashley P
Anybody got any kitchen (cabinet especially) pros/cons to share? Stuff you love, stuff you hate? John, what's in your new house?
JohnC
Love the door hinges that don't slam. Love deep and tall cabinets. Love LED lighting built in under the top row cabinets. Hate fake wood. Hate fake laminates over particle board Hate paints, wood stains, etc., that can't be wiped clean. Hate anything (microwave, vent, etc.,) that hangs low over the stove top / cook top.
Ashley P
All great points that I agree with. I've been looking at some of the "mechanical" solutions to storage problems, like different corner cabinet options. Toe kick storage, fold up/down counter tops for extra temporary space. Any kitchens with islands? How many inches between it and the counter? 42" is my current goal.

Don't know where my tape measure is, but I guess it's approximately 48 inches or more to the island from my cook top side cabinets.
mstrpth
mines probably a 6' gap. add counter top plugs and a built in paper towel holder.
Ashley P
Counter top plugs? Like in the top? Remember I've got kids....how many spills will those tolerate?? lol I'm planning to have a short backsplash and plugs just above it. Several more plugs per counter than the house my folks built. 6' is big. I don't have that much room anywho. That's why I'm asking. If I put a 42" gap, a 24" island, I'll only have 33" between pushed back chairs at the table. I'm pondering a drop leaf island. I think 42" lets me turn around with one step. Two of us can pass by without bumping. And, if we get too fat to pass each other we'll get less food, hmmm.... thus a couple's girth is limited by that gap. (Rabbit trail/eureka moment right there, huh?) Thanks for ideas.
Ashley P
Oh, I'm pondering about making my island movable for the first few months to figure out where it's home needs to be. Possible leaving it movable.
