NewEST DD 1985 LTD WagonTF????

506 posts in this topic

Well...Im officially off my meds.  Title says it all.  From Focus ST to Mustang GT to LTD Wagon...

Drove through the torrential downpours to South Indiana yesterday to pick up this gigantic nugget.  I checked it out last weekend when we were on the way up to South Bend for the weekend and after alot of thought and a little bit of negotiation the previous owner (super super cool guy) and I had a deal worked out.  Shes dingy and dinged up but extremely solid and the paint actually has some potential.

The interior is WAY better than I was expecting and as comfy as an old Grandpa could hope for.

The main reason for the purchase lies under the skin tho...

Exploder 302 and 4R70W with an 8.8 with 3.73's and SN95 discs in all 4 corners.  Painless wiring harness, A9 computer, all new AC components.  He put it on a lift to let me look around and its cleaner underneath than my 2015 GT was.  Everything was straight and solid.  The 4r70W is controlled by an older Quick 1 controller and shifted like complete DOG **** when I went on the test drive and drove it home but I didnt let that bother me cause 1) I was gonna mess with the tune and try to get it right and 2) part of the deal was a Fox clutch pedal setup and aluminum quadrant :D

Initially on the drive home I got to wondering wtF I was doing and the usual "buyers remorse" set it...tho thats being a bit dramatic...just wasnt 100% sure I was in my right mind really.  Bout an hour in, shortly after the gas station pics were taken and we were back on the highway my doubts started to fade and how truly good this little POS is started to shine.  She runs like a TOP, cruises down the highway with only minimal vibration (all 4 wheels are curbed pretty bad before being put on this car), AC blows cold, defrost works great, wipers did their job etc etc.  I made it home with only one puicker moment thanks to some bump steer and a very bumpy and narrow construction area with concrete barriers on both sides.  Now on to what I need/want to sort out here soon.

1) Trans tuning.  When I got the car it would shift 1-2 near 4K rpm at light throttle and would shift so hard it wouldnt "chirp" the back tires, it would CHIRP em lol.  Lifting to shift helped but got old quick.  The rest of the gears were similar and OD wouldnt kick in till damned near 70mph.  Downshifts were fairly brutal as well.  I figured Ide give it one shot at getting the shifts in order and if it didnt work, T5 swap would start immediately.  Got out the laptop last night and after a little trial and error I saw some improvement which encouraged me to keep going.  This morning she drove to work at light throttle like any other factory 4r70W car/truck would.  Ive never been so happy with an Auto before :roflmao:.  Shift firmness was dialed down and it no longer breaks your neck but when you step on it she barks the tires and rolls out.  I still want to T5 swap it but not anytime soon now which is nice.  Were about to find out the closing dates (owners and I both want to move it to as soon as possible) and I would be a fool to have the guts of this car hanging out when trying to move.

2) Bump Steer.  Its nowhere near as bad as the 66 used to be back in the day nor the Blue Coupe before I fixed it on both BUT its enough to be dangerous and at times on the drive home I was truely spooked that I was gonna add some pinstripes down the side of the car.  From what I can tell tho, its gonna be an easy fix as it appears that the PO used 97+ SN95 spindles which is a NO-NO when using a Fox K member.  It needs a new rack as the old one is leaking so Ill replace it and put some 94-95 spindles up front to get it dialed in nicely.

3) The motor is a bone stock Explorer rebuild, cam, springs and all.  As it sits, it floats the valves shortly after 5K rpm from what I can tell.  Im gonna set the WOT shift points to go no further than 5K for now but thats not gonna cut it for long.  Ide like to put some Andy's Parts valve springs in and an aftermarket cam of some sort to solve that nonsense.

4)  Typical little 30+ year old car stuff.  Certain windows dont work, or work poorly.  Power locks dont power lock.  I want to hide some of the electronic stuff/wiring better.  Tint the windows, buff the paint and maybe have some small dents removed.  New wheels and tires, these GOT TO GO!  Im excited to be able to work on this turd over the next little bit and will be taking it out to the Hill to see if I can break into the 9's with it as it sits.  Depending on how much fun I have will determine if I start tossing bolt-ons and tires at it.

Next morning hangover shot.  Nope...it wasnt a bad dream LOL

Nothing makes your minivan cool Ashley...sorry bud :roflmao:

Yeah, its not many people's cup of tea, but I never liked tea anyways!  Its a goofy fun little car tho and I look forward to seeing where things go with it.  It was the change of pace I needed I think.  Simple, easy to work on and I can still have fun with it at the Hill.  Shouldnt take much to get it to run with most of the bolt on 5th gens out there and if I get bored running mid 8's Ill spray it into the 7's.

First I gotta sort a few small things out and then go get some HUMILIATING baselines.  If you want your chance to FINALLY beat me, feel free to join us

I was reading a thread on Camaro5.

It seems the manual cars are horribly under geared for the weight.

They are claiming 11's on M6's with just bolt-ons, exhaust and the gear before ever going heads and cam.

Like I said, my tune isn't perfect, but I realize running all season tires with TC on leaving at idle is killing my ET also.

Example...

I turned TC off and tried to run it. Just leaving at idle, it spun every gear until I gave up peddling it at Beech Bend (which is much better than the Hill for traction). If I recall correctly, that was 1st 2nd and 3rd gears in the A6. When I tried to stall up, I got mad wheel hop.

If I address those things holding me back, it'll go a lot quicker. trust me.

You have the ability to put tires on and get the tune sorted.  We all already know itll be fast once you do, you have almost all the pieces needed to make it happen!

Im gonna get this sucker running right around town (almost there) then see how slow it is at the Hill and attack from there.  Honestly...and every car guy on this Forum that says the following is DOOMED to go back on it...ready for it???  This car runs so sweet that Im almost afraid to do too much to it.  It really honestly is quicker (were talking for DD status/putting around town, getting on the highway etc) than I was expecting and its super happy to just hit the road and cruise.  The trans is almost dialed in and Im only a couple tweaks away from being happy enough with it to keep it for a while.  Ive got it going thru the gears where I want RPM wise at low throttle and the shifts are super comfortable, not harsh, not super soft either and Im dialing in the converter lockup.  I still need to sort out the downshifting and then I will work on WOT shifts.  Cool thing is its dead nuts reliable so far and its getting more and more fun to jump in and run errands in.  I got the CEL to shut off last night and Ive put about 40 miles on it since and it hasnt turned back on.  Not holding my breath BUT I at least know how to get it to turn off long enough to get it to pass emissions which is all that matters.  Ran codes and all but 1 have to do with the missing EGR and Smog junk.  Its throwing a Neutral Safety Switch code which Im not sure about but I read it wont trigger the CEL so I wont waste my time chasing it down.

Took a minute to work on the turd last night before the rains came in.  Dug into the pass rear door to chase a squeak and sort out an issue with the power window.  Squeak gone, window goes up and down much smoother and I pulled the power lock actuator to order some new ones.  I also pulled the grill and dingy headlight surrounds out and hit them with some trim black.

Subtle but much cleaner looking.  The headlights are TERRIBLE and way out of alignment so Ill put some new ones in and line them up properly.  I also noticed that at idle with the AC on, the volt gauge drops to 10v or so and the lights dim out bad.  With the AC off its all good.  I was going to do a 3G swap anyways and JUST pulled one off the 66 so looks like Ill be doing it sooner than later.  Got a bunch of parts coming in to swap out the leaky power steering rack and try to get rid of the bump steer/tram issues while at it.  Then its wheels/tires and maybe look into getting some of the dings popped.

I dont believe it does but Ill definitely check.  I noticed that in park the voltage stays much closer to where it should be, put it in Drive and it drops considerably.  RPM difference isnt that much from Park to Drive and its pretty low at idle so I might bump it up and see if thats not part of it.

Ill write NOPE on the left and YEP on the right of the gauge and treat it like a Magic 8 Ball.  "Will I be able to go fast in this thing???"  Drop it in gear and watch the needle quickly head into the NOPE.

Meguires #7 and some SEM trim black and she's already 10 years younger and a solid 10 footer!  I've got a mountain of parts to start throwing at it to get it steering right, quietly and safer to drive.
