Looks like this should be a fun weekend. I got to work a little on the 73 after finishing up a privacy fence at the house. Swapped out the gas tank and sending unit and poured some gas in. What do you know i got her running off the new tank and gas in just coming out the vent tubes....ERG!!!! O well it came with a new intake manifold and i ordered a edlebrock 1406. So thats my weekend plan, get hat all on and make take her for a spin

still have to paint the bottom, hood, trunk, tail panels, and bumpers black but the main part is done. Nothing perfect but good from 10 foot. Its low gloss so we will see how it is in a day or so

Raptor lined?  What you doin, Gambler Rally or something?

Matt

Just doing things a bit different.. Most all the rust i found was in the bottom 1/4 of the car. I figure it will give it a little different look and protect it nicely. Plus it will hide some imperfections

If you look in the build section on Vintage Mustang there is a guy who picked up rough (tho I think its in great shape personally) little coupe and set it up to run the Gambler 500 which is an off-road rally kinda deal like the Gumball but on dirt/trail.  Theres one coming up around here in Sept I believe.

Another Saturday and a little more progress. I used Raptor liner to do the bottom of the car, tail panel, and front valance. 37574417_10160558228740521_8194122715376910336_n.jpg37588623_10160558228850521_4220110010350305280_n.jpg37588626_10160558228910521_7969879079828586496_n.jpg37537770_10160558229005521_4761735730319851520_n.jpg37609825_10160558229155521_3883110873258000384_n.jpg37611849_10160558229250521_4266408108533743616_n.jpg37596881_10160558229430521_4887323056545988608_n.jpg

It looks alot better than I expected honestly!  Almost like modern textured plastic trim!

Matt

Yeah, i was really surprised by how thin of a line it left too. That and how nice of a sheen it has. I looked in to having  a finer grit and the key was high pressure and distance. So 55 PSI and shoot

its taken most of the day but i refuse to put the 73 bumper back on. The 71/72 is cooler and much more agressive looking. Problem is they are completely different. 71/72 bumpers sit way higher and dont stick out as far. Due to regulations in 73.....So the even though bolt holes are there it just wont fit. Diff Fenders etc..

Well screw that. I have angle iron and im making a bracket. Will it be perfect? NO...WIll it look good? Yes  I have to get a little more adjustment to do but its getting close. Have to wide the holes in the factory bracket to get it up about a 1/4". Also need to go back a little more. Once in place ill tack the bracket in place on the bumper and i have some reinforcement plates for the back of the bracket since the holes will be crazy

I swear to god this car is going to drive me crazy! So first after working all day saturday trying to get this bumper lined up i finally do some measurements and figure out the bumper brackets are off! It almost looks like someone put the bracket in upside down because both sides angle the same way I got them adjusted a little but ended up having to bend the bracket out. I had to TORCH the **** out of the bolts and bracet to get things done. Finally i got it as good as its going to get. Its a bumper so its never gonna be a tight fit and im starting to build a plate to fill in the gap as well.

Problem 2.....Rear bumper wont come off. The bolts just effing spin. So i remove the nuts from the filler plate on the rear and a pair of vice scrips allow me to break it free. ARG!!!!!!  Anyway screw that thing, im going to mount a 71/72 as they fit more snug so screw the filler plate

Problem 3, Rear valence isnt snug. Ok it WONT SNUG! Guess i need to remove it. Oh look some asshat as double nutted this MFER. A regular bolt with a nut on it to hold it still so he can put the inside trunk nut on. Part of the reason it wouldnt snug up. Naturally i had to SAWZAW this MFER off. I did scuff the rear a little in doin so but luckily i have plenty of bedliner...

So yeah, FUCK THIS CAR!!!!! Luckily i have spare everything. So i need to get some bolts and paint the rear valanece. Naturally the 71/72 bumper i have is BENT! I cant get the brackets off it....

BLAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok im done whinning

so everything is finally where its going to be as far as the front. I welded the nuts on the brackets, welded the bracket to the bumper metal, welded my reinforcement plates (They are actually camber plates from the 65 i had to remove for the R&P),fabbed up a sheetmetal bracket to hold a filler plate, cut the rear filler plate in half and made it the filler plate for the front, and then bonded it together it a middle top plate that mimics the lines in the center.

Its nothing perfect but it look decent. I am going to sand the front bumper, filler, new rear chrome bumper, and rear valance this weekend and spray them with bed liner.

Then i can focus on painting the hood and trunk as well as starting to tear the top of the engine apart.

But im over here with my metal fab Ideas....Matt knows ive discussed some ideas with him. I have this whole extra Dash for the 65 so im going to pull it out and see if i can fab up a console using C channel and sheet metal.  Idea will be to cut around 9" out of the center of the Dash right below where the dash pad sits. Use the channel as rails for a sunken in/modern style dash console that will go down kinda like the 73s dash.  The C hannel will also act a groove to hold the side panels in that im considering using abs for but only time will tell. Ive been looking at metal fab tools all morning. Need to order a Throatless Shear and a Bead roller...And some cleco fastners....

Don't forget that many interior parts are made of lightweight plastic for crash protection, so that the interior breaks not the person.  You might wanna make things that "give".

well got ahead of myself spraying Blitz Black on the hood, trunk, and wing. I dont know what i was thinking but i put the pressure too low and in general had the spray pattern messed up. Bad coverage and i have runs all over the hood and rear spoiler.  So im going to start sanding tomorrow40101630_10160697963850521_8682219360288243712_n.jpg40106835_10160697963650521_7321556605470769152_n.jpg

yeah i actually took the orbital to it today and it would of taken forever to wet sand it by hand. I got it fairly flat but needs more work however after sanding its still got issues. Started gunking up the paper so ill let it dry more then sand it down and spray again.

I also realized i forgot to mix the gallon jug. So my flattening agent probably is settled n the bottom too. So i dont even know what i was thinking yesterday. Just skipped all the basic steps

My (worthless?) input:  how's your lighting?    My limited experience says that any shadows ect can make judging paint thickness very difficult.

And, if it's too wet to sand, it's probably wet enough to strip pretty easy.

Either way, keep at it.  Some of the best body guys around do it twice!  lol
